EXTERIOR DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS AT GWAFFU CONCRETE PRODUCTS LTD

The design of compounds has very many options but the common choices used in Uganda include pavers, asphalt, rocks, lawns, flower gardens, ponds, hedges, shades, pagodas, wall plants, fountains and trees or shrubs. This website describes briefly what can be got at Gwaffu Concrete Products.

ADVANTAGES OF PAVERS

They are much stronger than mortar.

They have predetermined cracks between them made in a form of a design.

They allow water to drain through them so that it does not form puddles on the surface.

THE PROCESS OF MAKING PAVERS

Pavers are made out of cement, stone dust, river (fine), lake (coarse) sand and cement. These are mixed and immediately compacted by hydraulic machines in molds with particular designs. The pavers are kept for one to two days in the dark. These pavers are then soaked in water and then left to dry in a shade. It is difficult to compress soak or keep in the dark large surfaces.

GROUND PREPARATION

The ground is set to levels determined by topographic surveyors. Loam soil is removed as it has vegetation debris. Partitioning walls for different levels are put in place. Marrum is ridded of vegetation and compacted into a base on lowermost layer.

LAYING PAVERS

For places that are to take up pavers, lake-sand is put and compacted evenly. Pavers are then laid on top and fixed at the sides with road curbs.

SPECIAL TYPES OF PAVERS

Coloured Pavers: These are given a colour and are placed to match other structures like walls, vegetation, roofs etc. on the other hand, they can be placed in patterns like a draft board, demarcating foot paths, parking lots, underground features like cables or write words in the parking.

Terrazzo surfaced: These pavers with terrazzo surface are useful for special areas just like coloured ones.

Nil covered pavers: These are useful mainly in areas under shades.

Lighting pavers and road curbs: These have Optical systems that allow them to give light in large surfaces and enable proper vision at night say for car parking

Fluorescent pavers and road curbs: These reflect background light and have the same role as coloured pavers.

LAWNS

Loam soil is placed in layers with appropriate manure or fertilizers making an even soil fertility for even grass growth after. Lawns can be of different types

GARDENING CONSIDERATIONS

Treading: some plants are resistant to treading and can be used in schools near foot-paths.

Domestic animals: Animals like goats browse on most flower plans. When making choice of plant, we take into consideration the presence or absence of such animals.

Hours of full sunshine: Areas between walls, under taller trees, have to be planted with plants that do best under shades.

Other plants: Some plants like Lantana camara suppress the growth of others. The plants to be planted with them have to be chosen with due consideration of their ability to survive in the presence of others.

Colors of walls, roof, walls and pavements: The other flowers, walls, roofs or neighboring houses also determine the nature and color of our plants.

Fertility of soil: Texture and nutrients in the soil determine the need to fertilize or the nature of plants that can survive in the soil. Some plants overgrow and change form in very fertile soils.

Plants Considerations

Sun/Drought Resistant: Some plants prefer dry or wet areas and the soil wetness determines the nature of plants to be planted there.

Survive under Shades: The type and direction of taller plants and walls or embankments determine the survival of particular plants.

Shrubs: Some plants grow to particular heights and are suitable for areas near houses and others are not.

Big trees: Some plants achieve very great heights after years and are very good in trapping lightening and wind..
